ABOUT ME

IMG_3180.JPG

My name is Jessica, the designer behind Jess’ Root Knots. I studied and worked in architecture for over ten years before fully transitioning into fiber design. That training continues to shape how I think, design, and communicate today. I approach crochet patterns the same way I once approached architectural drawings: as systems meant to be understood, trusted, and followed with confidence.

I moved from Taiwan to Italy in 2016 to further pursue my architectural path. However, years of cultural immersion, followed by a period of enforced stillness, reshaped my relationship with time and process—opening a path away from architecture and toward crochet. Gradually, crochet became the center of my creative practice. What began as a personal exploration evolved into a design practice focused on garments: how they are constructed, how they move, and how they relate to the body.

I like to think that my work challenges the perception of crochet as rigid or overly “handmade.” Softness, drape, and gravity guide every design decision. I work carefully with yarn choice, hook size, and stitch structure to create fabrics that fall naturally on the body and feel calm, wearable, and refined. I aim to create garments that go beyond what is typically found in stores, combining thoughtful fit, the warmth of handmade craftsmanship, and aesthetic care that mass production cannot replicate.

Living between climates and cultures has further shaped my approach to crochet. In my early work, I focused on close-fitting silhouettes shaped directly by the body, often imagining these pieces worn under palm trees, between sun-warmed ground and tropical shorelines. Over years of living in Europe, I developed a deeper relationship with colder climates and thermal materials. Gradually, my focus shifted toward looser constructions and fabrics that drape—designs that feel softer, more relaxed, and intuitive. Throughout this journey, the work continues to balance ease, softness, and an understated sensuality.

My patterns are written for makers who value thoughtful construction and clear logic—and, most importantly, for those seeking more than just enjoyable crafting hours, but a finished piece they can feel proud to wear every day.
